Cannabis, or marijuana as the brainwashed masses refer to it, effects the human body in many ways.  This post, and the infographic below it, is more specifically about the effects of marijuana on the brain.  Despite what your government tells you, the human brain has evolved to accept, and use THC.  In fact, every vertebrate creature on this planet has cannabinoid receptors, as explained in this clip from a BBC documentary about this very subject.

Science has taught us that evolution is nature’s way of ensuring the strong survive and the weak do not.  Strong, healthy creatures propagate their species and pass on their traits to their offspring.  If a creature suffers from a defect or a weakness, either the creature will die before reproducing or its defect will be weakened or not passed on to the next generation.  The good traits, like a porcupine’s defensive quills or an octopus’ camouflaging ability, are passed on to the offspring to help them survive and live a better life.  This would indicate that genetics (or God) decided we need cannabinoid receptors in our brains and they must be there because it makes us better, stronger, healthier, or improves our existence in some other way.  According to Wikipedia, “Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), cannabidiol (CBD) and cannabinol (CBN) are the most prevalent natural cannabinoids and have received the most study.”

Speaking from first hand experience, these three cannabinoids have definitely improved my existence.

While there are no benefits in smoking tobacco cigarettes, the tobacco manufacturers have continued to market their paper wrapped toxins for decades. Cigarette smoking is now banned in all 50 states to one degree or another. Oklahoma does not ban the smoking per se but they do have requirements for ventilation if smoking is to be allowed.

On the other hand, smoking marijuana was outlawed for the longest time and in the recent years, several states have come to realize there are in fact medical benefits with the herb. To date, there are 14 states who allow the use of marijuana; Alaska, Hawaii, Oregon, Washington, California, Nevada, New Mexico, Colorado, Montana, Michigan, New Jersey, Maine, Vermont and Rhode Island. In a Senate Bill signed into law on January 18, 2010, New Jersey was the 14th State to allow marijuana for medical purposes. Two of the remaining states are somewhat confusing. Arizona allows physicians to prescribe marijuana but not to smoke and Maryland has allowed the defense of medical marijuana usage.

If states allowed marijuana for recreational purposes then regulated and taxed marijuana as they do liquor or tobacco, perhaps their deficit would be much lower.

Marijuana – whether medical or recreational – has a twisted and controversial history… Pot proponents will tell you that there are plenty of financial benefits to the country, and as we found out, they might be right. There are billions of dollars at stake when it comes to legalizing marijuana, not to mention the reduced costs in enforcement of prohibition laws. (source)

Is Cannabis treated unfairly in the United States? Let’s check the stats, shall we?

Fair or unfair, to know cocaine is considered less dangerous than marijuana worries me for some reason. The laws of yesterday just don’t seem to fit anymore, and the statistics seem to support that assessment.
